OnlineAdvertising
Online
advertising is a type of
promotion that uses the internet to attract customers to a particular
product or service. There is a vast array of online advertising that is
available including; paid search, banner ads, social media advertising, blogs, online classified advertising, advertising networks and e-mail marketing.
The Advantage:
The first advantage of online advertising is its timeliness. Ads can be
posted and instantaneously viewed rather than requiring time to be published in
a newspaper or aired on television.
Secondly, there is no limit of reach or frequency. Online ads can be
view globally, and can be posted far more often than would be with other
mediums. Another great advantage is the interactiveness of online advertising.
Types of ‘call to action’ such as; click now to save, or play to win a discount
etc., are very strong when using this type of media.
Ethics:
Ethics can be a trying issue when
it comes to online advertising. Websites may use large numbers of
advertisements. Some of which have misleading images about their offerings or
may lead the viewer to believe the ad is actually an error message on their
screen. Some websites don’t monitor the ads they feature. For this reason some
ads may to lead to sites with inappropriate or unsafe content. As a result
online ads of this variety have lost a lot of credibility. E-mail advertisements
face the same issue when “spam” e-mails are sent out for phishing purposes.
Nowhere Where But Up:
In the five years from 2006 to 2010, revenue from online advertisements has skyrocketed. The revenue from search ads alone has climbed from $343 million to $907 million, which is an increase of $564 million. The revenue from online ads surpasses the revenue generated from news papers, magazines, and radio. It falls second with only television ads which still produce a better ratio of advertisments to sales.

i agree that online ads have the most traffic. this is why they have all the advantages over print, outdoor, and radio ads. TV will always have the advantage of the most credible ads. which is why they are still on top. i think TV will move into 2nd spot, just because of the mass amount of traffic generated on the web.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Tanner. I feel that Television in five years won't be able to compete with online ads, due to torrent based media downloading sites that are fast becoming the most common way to watch tv series. The convienience of having access to a tv show when and where you want it can't be matched by dvr and the technological advancements are sure to continue even further making online the clear choice.
ReplyDeleteyeah i agree too., even me don't like movie on tv, downloading from torrent or using netflix is much better than t.v. in coming years online marketing will be the first choice of all companies.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree that in a few years, television will be unable to compete with online ads. We are all seeing a huge increase in the use of online media streaming through companies such as Netflix and even Rogers which have their own online streaming programs for movies and TV shows. A disadvantage of online advertising is that it can be very saturated. There are hundreds of millions of online ads and users may become more likely to ignore ads than to actually take the time to click on the ads for more details.
ReplyDeleteHey Janessa,
ReplyDeleteIm also in agreement with everyone else here on how TV will gradually take a back seat to streaming TV shows online, and how this has already and will continue to create a very saturated advertising evironment. I feel this is where we will start to see greater creativity and even bigger budgets put into online advertising, just so companies can stay ahead of the rst of the field which should make for some interesting viewing ahead. Good work on a really informative post to.
Hey Janessa,
ReplyDeleteFirst off, that video was quite interesting!!! $3 return for every $1 spent?? wow thats awesome for a return on investment for online ads. To follow along with the rest of this discussion, I agree TV will slowly become a thing of the past and streaming TV shows online will become a commonality for the future. With the mass amount of money spent fighting for air time on television ads, I agree that down the road this budget will be targeted more strategically to online advertising and integrated into web video streaming.
Great job again with this post
Donald
Hey Janessa
ReplyDeleteYou stated a great advantage in that online ads are timeliness. This is very true because online ads can be easily posted in no time and seen by so many viewers. Since people are becoming more into technology and using technology a lot more, it is really easy to get a large reach through using online ads and since they are not as costly as some of the other advertising sources, it is a great source of advertisements for companies. I found the video to be very interesting video well
Great job!
Hey Janessa.
ReplyDeleteYour are right! The last five years in revenue from online advertisements have skyrocketed, wow. That graph really gives you a perspective on just how bug of a number that is. But online advertising, like you stated is so timeless, it can quickly be changed or modified. Which is clearly such a positive attribute from a marketers stand point.
Thanks again for such a well thought out post.
Tv won't be able to keep up with all the online ads. The images you used help show just how much online ads revenue has increased in recent years.
ReplyDeleteGreat job
Hello Janessa
ReplyDeleteVery well done, It looks like you took the time to do the research on this topic. I was most interested in your comment "there is no limit of reach or frequency. Online ads can be view globally, and can be posted far more often than would be with other mediums." It is quite true, It is so fast an relatively cheep to put something together and put it on youtube.
Thanks so much for your enlightenment.
David
You're welcome for the enlightenment :D
DeleteHey Janessa,
ReplyDeleteAfter reading your blog, I agree with Nicholas Hamilton. TV definitely won't be able to keep up with online advertisements as it is clear this is the way of the future. Im interested to see what the future of online advertisements holds.
Thanks,
Andrew
Hello Janessa, I also agree with Nick's statement. I mean tv ratings are already at a low for the past decade now, and what drives the advertisements is the ratings. Pretty soon companies will just no longer see the need to advertise on TV and focus their marketing online.
ReplyDeleteThanks
Daniel
I think I might have to get into online advertising with numbers like those! I believe the disadvantages would be cost for companies that cannot afford such advertising. There’s always social media I guess.
ReplyDeleteGreat post Janessa!
ReplyDeleteI think agree with Tanner on this one too, with the speed that the internet is advancing and the areas it's advancing too (i.e. social lives) the internet will be the number one source for whatever is it that anyone can possibly want at any given time.
Hey Janessa,
ReplyDeleteI definately agree with the others in the senses that with how quickly the internet is expanding and upgrading that it will and probably already is the best way to advertise to a wide variety of viewers. Very informative video as well
Good Job!
Brad
Advertising and social media go hand in hand. I speak of this with personal experiences. With owning a promotions company, I can safely say that advertising online via Facebook, or Twitter locally is a crucial advertising tool. Not too many people watch television anymore and the advertisements on there are hardly catching the attention of the consumers. Through owning the promotions company, I can also state that word of mouth advertising is the best form of advertising. Once people start talking about it, and it's the buzz in town, that's when you know you're doing it right!

Hey Janessa,
ReplyDeleteYour post was great with lots of great information. I can relate to the ethics component of this post. A trusted brand can generate more interest and sales through online advertising in comparison to a non-trusted brand because people tend to ignore a lot of the pop-ups and banners. They go to webpages they desire to go on and they only pay attention to ads that would suit their needs. Everything else is ignored, at least I can say so from personal experience. Regardless, great post. Good job!

I agree on alot of points brought up in this post. Eventually Web Advertising will take off and marketer's as well as large businesses will consider the web as a form of advertising much more seriously I think at least.

Tv ads will deffinately be replaced by online ads because everyone is online and using the internet to stream or download programs to watch for free. Thats why blockbuster went out of business, they couldnt not keep up with the online downloading and streaming of sites such as netflix and 1channel.ch. Even for sports or out of country programs you are now able to actually watch live Tv on your computer so the ads displayed on the computer is on a network in another area. Netflix is also not showing commercials so the public is less attuned to any other ads because of the perfect stream rate and no commericals.
ReplyDeleteGreat blog
