Social Media Marketing

Social Media Marketing
By Huy Nguyen

Ever since the explosion of social media, it has had a major impact on our society in regards to how we do business, how we interact and communicate. In society today, the top reasons that people use social media are to stay in touch with family and friends as well as to connect with new people. Social media networks have drastically changed how we stay in touch with people. In the past, geography used to limit our social links in life. However, nowadays there is no geographical limit in regards to our social circles. Social media is continuously changing the way we interact and engage, there is now a decrease in reading and discussing personal topics on blogs and forums. Instead, people are turning to social networking pages in order to do this. Because of this, blogs are becoming a resource for expert information or advice.

Social media has transformed the way brand marketers approach the consumer. As marketers, we need to recognize the significant impact that social media has upon consumers. There is a noticeable shift away from company brand websites; however consumers are still interested in interacting with company brands. We now see that most major company brand websites have social media links to direct consumers to their chosen social media platform in order to promote interactivity with consumers.

As companies and businesses incorporate social media into their marketing strategies, consumers are becoming increasingly involved with companies since the inception of social media networking. There is a rise in transparency of companies as consumers are now able to just verbally spread complaints about services and products to a few friends and family; consumers are now able to spread any issues through their social media platform which will likely reach a few hundred people or even a few thousand depending on the number of “friends” or “followers” any given consumer has. Hence, many major companies have their own dedicated social media team to deal with consumer complaints on each major social media platform.

There is no doubt that social media has a profound impact on business today. According to survey results that Forbes Magazine obtained, three out of four Chief Marketing Officers say that social media impacts sales. Social media also has a measurable impact on factors such as brand awareness, and loyalty. CMOs use data from social media in order to make decisions not just in marketing but also used to improve product development and to increase the customer experience of the product or service.

Below is a YouTube video by Vitrue Inc., a social media marketing firm which attempts to illustrate the effects of social media in the world of marketing.

  1. I too think that social media has blown up within the last couple years. It has made it faster and easier to advertise to given markets on the social media outlets. Most major companies and brands have all social media outputs directly on the site for users to easily get accesss. Using Social media these days is a great way for brand awareness and getting the message out to the public.

  3. I really liked how thorough this blog post was Huy. You really outlined the impact of social media on every level from executive to employee to consumer, etc. You have also made an interesting point about the delicate balance that a company must walk in establishing a social media presence and allowing for user contribution but still enabling a consumer to interact with a brand. This is a complex task, especially when one side gets more prominent, the other naturally declines.

  5. Good work here mate, a really informative post covering both the consumer and business use of social media. I almost think of it now as having a slight Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde persona, where by it has the ability to help propel a business/brand towards success. On the other hand it equally has the power to tarnish the reputation of a brand with relative ease.
    Cheers

  6. Good job Huy,

Any questions I may have had with social media are definitely cleared up with this well put together post. Quite informative my friend. I really appreciate how you explored all aspects from user to even the business side of things. I use to think that Facebook, like most companies, was managed all internally and that there was little outside influences. I found that point quite interesting that there are external companies helping managing many social media sites. I can only imagine that as the internet progresses, so will the complexity of social media.

Thank you again for such an insightful post!

  9. Huy,

I appreciate the insightful blog! I think the use of social media is extremely important to marketers as we all know word of mouth advertising is one of the most powerful forms of advertisement. The ability to rate and review a business or product via a social media platform is becoming increasingly popular and useful.

  10. Hello Huy
I found your comment "there is now a decrease in reading and discussing personal topics on blogs and forums. Instead, people are turning to social networking pages in order to do this. Because of this, blogs are becoming a resource for expert information or advice" very interesting. It is quite funny that people are moving away from blogging. At the same time we are learning that Blogging is the future. It is quite interesting.
Thanks so much for the insight

  12. Wow it so crazy to think about a global community. Anyone in the world can contact anyone else. Social media has given average people the power to travel and hangout with the click of a button, and given consumers and businesses a place to connect and share. Good post Huy and nice video.

  13. Hello Huy, I was really looking forward to this blog topic actually and I feel that you did a great job. Social media has had such a unbelievably big influence on our generation and I feel most people don't even realize it. When people read a book or watch a movie 50 years from now about trends that changed the world social media will be the staple on that list.

    Thanks
    Daniel

  14. Informative post Huy, it's true that social media has exploded in recent years. It seems like it happened almost over night. I had no idea that there were actual companies out there managing the social media of others. I always assumed that it was an internally managed aspect of their marketing strategy.

  16. Well done!
You've really grasped the extent of social media marketing. If done well enough, a good market concept can become viral and spread to millions within a few hours. Its amazing to think how a single idea can be spread nationally and become popular so quickly.
